This section is by no means complete. Any errors are entirely our fault. We
may mangle the Japanese language to some degree and we apologize in advance.
Comments, corrections, and contributions are always welcome.
The Japanese Language
Written Japanese comes in three kinds:
- KANJI: Ideographs and Chinese characters conveying whole ideas.
- KANA: Phonetic syllabry. There are two kinds of Kana:
- HIRAGANA: Curvalinear symbols.
- KATAKANA: Linear symbols. Often used for foreign words.
- ROMAJI: Kanji and Kana transliterated into Roman letters.
There are several systems of transliterating Japanses characters into Roman
characters. In this site we shall use a modified Hepburn system. Japanese
syllables are the free standing vowels, the free standing N, and consonants
combined with vowels. Each syllable is stressed equally.
Most Japanese vowels are short vowels. The occassional long vowel is
equivalent to two continuous short vowels and is usually represented with an
overscored letter. Overscored letters are not cross platform, so we shall just
assume them, e.g. "Kyoto" is assumed to have overscores on the o's.
