Sensei Tommy Annual Course.

Once again Sensei Tommy has put together an informative, enlightening and entertaining course.

On the 10^th we went through the basics with a lot of emphasis on correctly maintaining stance throughout the execution of technique.

Some handy self defence manoeuvres were also practiced.

Unfortunately I missed the Thursday course so I can’t report on that one.

Friday night was a lot of fun with knife fighting being the main focus of the evening. Nothing like disarming an opponent and rendering them helpless!

We also practiced some more unarmed defensive (but quite painful) techniques, useful in crowd control situations.

Overall another great course from the master!

If you missed this one, get yourself along to next years!  Remember, it is not everyday you get to train with a world renowned 7^th Dan so take advantage of the opportunity!

Sensei Tommy Morris Course DAY 3

A great finale to the course!! Tonight we went through all of the kata’s from Pinan Nidan through to Jiin.  Then, onto some street fighting principles with Sensei Tommy giving numerous personal examples to highlight what is effective and what is not…We did some more knife fighting defences and then went over strategies for surviving multiple opponents.  All good stuff, lot’s of fun to learn and great to know!

The Gradings are on Saturday 8^th September, best of luck to everyone attempting a new belt level.

Good luck to Ra and Pritt who are attempting there confirmation grades of Shodan (1^st Dan) and to David and Saki who are going for there Shodan-Ho (Black)!

I will post grading results on Monday night.

Sensei Tommy Morris Course DAY 2

Tonight was great fun, we did a lot of work in pairs as we learnt the bunkai to Sainchin Kata.  Later in the night we did some knife defences along with some general street fighting principles which had us flying through the air with the greatest of ease.  All in all a great night!

Sensei Tommy Morris course DAY1

In July of this year Sensei Tommy was involved in the standardisation of kata which would be allowed to in competitions.  So, after ensuring that our basics were ok, we learnt the ratified version of Bassai Dai.  This version of Bassai Dai is very similar to our own Shukokai version, but the changes were sometimes subtle and difficult to implement as we were all used to doing it our own way.  However we eventually got it (I think)!! After practising some of the moves over and over (and over) my arms are quite sore as I type this.  Sensei Tommy went through the entire bunkai (application) and we got to practice some of the harder

to visualise moves on a partner, which helped a great deal!!!  Bassai Dai took up the entire first day, and as always Sensei Tommy made it a fun and enriching experience. 

I think we are learning the new version of Sainchin tomorrow (Thursday) which should be interesting!

Sensei Tommy Morris Course

Once again Sensei Tommy has delivered a fantastic seminar!   As always Sensei stressed the basics at the start of each class, describing how each technique was delivered in both competition and street fighting.  After basics we went through a number of counters and take downs, lots of fun being thrown through the air and our break falls came in very handy!!

The best part of the night (for me at least) was the katas.  Sensei Tommy’s knowledge is unparalleled, and the opportunity to study under him cannot be over rated.

We went through Annanko, Bassai Dai, Sainchin, and all the bunkai (application) of each technique!  A real eye opener!

We also learnt a new kata, Matsumura No Bassai, which has many similarities with Bassai Dai.  A very close in kata with devastating grabs and powerful uppercuts predominant, almost all stances were niko ashi dachi (cat stance).   The bunkai for Matsumura No Bassai, again an eye opener, the number of lethal and crippling techniques contained hidden in these kata is quite amazing! Not to mention a great deal of fun to learn!

The grading are on today (Saturday) as I type this, I will post the results on Monday or Tuesday.

Good luck to Pritt, Ra and Sam who are attempting there Shodan Ho belts (Black).  Hope you survive it guys!!!

Congratulations guys!! Great work.

All our entries fought very well giving it there best shot. Young Jimmy and Adrian were first up
and they fought quite well, scoring a few points, but their opponents were too strong on the day.

Matthew and Ra were the next fighters up, they showed from the first fight that they were a class
above the rest in the way they dominated their opponents, and with the ease that they won their fights.
Ra and Matthew met in the final with Matthew coming out the eventual winner.

Kasia entering only her third tournament did very well, gaining some much needed experience that helped
her to attain a third place! (Missed the final by only a half point)

Sensei Joe lost to the eventual winner but went on to win third place. Good effort Sensei!
Sensei will be trying out for the Australian team later this month.

Sensei Tommy Morris Seminar - night 3
Tonight Sensei Tommy started with the basics to see if we had improved over the course of the course (of course)! and then continued with our education in Kusokan Dai. Other things covered were throwing techniques and street application thereof in comparison to competition or in Dojo. Again Sensei Tommy brought us a new perspective into our training which we can develop in his absence.

Best of luck to all those who are being graded by Sensei Tommy on Saturday! Ooossaaa!

Sensei Tommy Morris Seminar - night 2
Tonight Sensei Tommy again concentrated on basics, this time with kicks. Most of the night was spent on a new kata called Kosukon Dai along with its Bunkai.
Brown and above then went through Ananko and its Bunkai.
Again a top nights training. I think that everyone who went from white belt up got alot out of the last two nights training and is looking forward to the final night on Wednesday. See you there!

Sensei Tommy Morris Seminar - night 1
After the first nights training I can see that I am going to learn alot in the next two nights. Tonight Sensei concentrated on basics: Stances, punches and kata. The basic part of the class was an eye opener. Myself and most of the people around me were trying the stances and punches in a totally new way, stressing different muscles and working different parts of the body. Tonights kata was Basai Dai, we learned a fair bit of its Bunkai which put a new slant onto the techniques being executed. Overall a top night, can't wait till tomorrow! Ooosaaah!!!

Kimekai Club Championships
A great turnout for this event made sure that a great day was had by all involved. Strong kumite in the seniors with a few hard knocks but no major injuries. It was great to see some faces that I haven't seen for two or more years from the Battistello dojo.
Kata was also surprising with some excellent kata from both the Kyu ranks and the blacks.

The Junior turnout was amazing! Their seemed to be hundreds of little Kimekai karateka running around. A few tears but they showed there spirit by getting up and fighting on! A fun day for the kids with some great experience gained.

Events like this really help to build us up as a club, it is not only a tournament, it is also a social event where you get to meet the guys from Highett (Sensei Marco), Blackburn (Sensei Richard), and Malvern (Sensei Luke and Sensei Sonya). So if you missed this one then get yourself along to the next one, because win, lose or draw you will get more out of it than you expect.

Basic Life Support Course
Around 20 participants received their Level 1 First Aid certificate after doing a one day course at Sensei Marco's dojo in Highett. The course was taught by Michael Bennet, who shared his experience as an Emergency Rescue Paramedic (and martial artist of some 20 years), to make the day an interesting and enjoyable learning experience.
After covering the required material for the course (DR ABCD, RICE, CPR etc) Michael covered
some common martial arts injuries and their treatment including concussion, broken jaw, broken nose, ruptured organs, broken pelvis (girls), bleeding on the brain etc... Let's hope these injuries aren't to common!!.
Sensei Joe and myself were there so Chikara now has two qualified 1st Aiders.
